STEP 1:
Measure deck handrail section (space between posts).
Cut top and bottom 2x4's to length. |
STEP 2:
Sandwich 2 x 4's. Find center and mark. Mark top and bottom 4 ½" on center
out from center using DecKorators template or marked speed square. |
STEP 3:
DrilI ¾" holes ¾" deep using paddle bit or forstner bit with stop gate.
Drilling holes 4 ½" on center will leave a 3 ¾" opening from baluster to baluster. |
STEP 4:
Apply silicone caulk in holes on bottom 2x4 to protect from moisture.
Insert balusters in bottom 2x4. |
STEP 5:
Install top 2x4. An easy effective way is to lay down unassembled portion and
brace bottom 2x4 with your foot while working the baluster into the holes of the top 2x4 to tighten. |
STEP 6:
Set rail section on 3" blocks and secure to handrail post. |
STEP 7:
Put on 2X4 or 2X6 top plate. If applicable, attach centerpiece to center baluster using 2 of the 3 self drilling screws provided.
Turn centerpiece so screws face out. Use 3rd self drilling screw as a set screw to prevent center from turning by drilling through
bottom of top 2X4 and through baluster. |
DecKorators recommends using rail support blocks for sections over 7 foot. Toenail support block to bottom
2 X 4 and to the deck to secure. |
Stairs:
Cut top and bottom 2X4's to length. Take top 2X4 flip upside down and turn 180 degrees. Sandwich 2X4's together and Mark 5½" on center
(leaving a less than 4" opening). Lay 2X4 on the nose of the treads (this will give you the proper angle for drilling) and
drill ¾" holes from the shallow side of the hole. |
