The FastenMaster Corex Concealed Fastening System is the fastest, easiest way
to conceal the heads of your deck screws on specific deck types.
- Use a standard drill and the Cortex setting tool to drive the Cortex
fastener to the preset level below the deck surface. The Cortex screw must be driven perpendicular to the deck, with two
screws per joist.
- Place the Cortex engineered plug into the cored-out hole and gently tap until it is flush with the deck surface.
Cortex Tip: Use scrap wood as a striking surface to eliminate potential marring the hammer may cause.
Cortex offers the strength of a "face fastened system"
BEAUTIFUL FINISHED LOOK
The finished look of the Cortex System is virtually invisible, so you can enjoy the
attractive deck surface without seeing any screw heads.
Cortex Tip: Under some conditions, you may see a subtle indication that there is a doweled plug in the deck. It is
recommended that you test the Cortex System on a few boards to ensure you approve of the final look.
Just as you may see a subtle board-to-board color variation in your composite decking,
you may also see a subtle color variation betweenplug and board at the time of installation.
Cortex engineered plugs are made of the same material as your deck and will weather to the same rich tone. This weathering
process may take a few weeks or months depending on the specific board and the intensity of sunlight.
THE CORTEX PLUG:
TESTED & GUARANTEED
Each Cortex plug has been engineered and tested to ensure ultimate long term performance.
- UV stability/long term weathering
- Intense freeze-thaw cyclic testing
- Expansion/contraction cyclic
- Moisture saturation/freezing performance
- Impact resistance
Based on comprehensive testing results, FastenMaster is able to warranty the performance of the Cortex plug connection for the
life of the deck. (See warranty for details)

THE CORTEX SCREW
The Cortex screw offers the highest level of board-to-deck connection strength, while also creating
a consistently cored hole for the plug connection.
The Cortex screw is coated using our proprietary coating process. It is approved for use in pressure treated wood and chemicals commonly
used in decking.
THE CORTEX SETTING TOOL
The Cortex setting tool is engineered to ensure the Cortex screw is set to the correct depth every time.
Setting the Cortex fastener
- The Cortex setting tool is required to ensure that the Cortex screw is set at the correct depth.
- The Cortex screw must be driven perpendicular to the deck surface for proper fit and ideal finished look.
Setting the Cortex engineered plug
To create a strong bond, the cored hole must be free of dirt or rain water.
To ensure ultimate performance, predrilling is required at butt joints and at the ends of boards. In keeping with common building practices, we
also recommend that you "sister" a board at butt joint connections.
Using other screws and plugs
The Cortex System is designed to offer ultimate long term performance. The interaction between deck, fastener and plug is
essential. The Cortex connection is fully tested and warranted. Use of non-Cortex screw or non-Cortex plug will nullify the
IDEAL FOR REAL WORLD
DECK FASTENING CHALLENGES:
First board/last board connections: Fasten and conceal the first and last board as you
would any other board.
Board removal: Cortex offers an easy board-removal solution. Simply remove existing plugs by tapping any wood screw
into the plugs and removing them. Back out the Cortex screws. Replace existing board. The new plugs and board will weather
to the same rich tone.
Stairs: The Cortex System allows you to fasten stairs the same way you fasten the rest of the deck.
